Latin American Milestone Froyo Now “Under Evaluation”?

Maybe it was just a type-o?  Two days ago, the Motorola software upgrade timeline clearly showed that the Latin American and Mexican Milestone would not be receiving Android 2.2 and that apparently started a war.  After 48 hours of anger and #motofail hashtags, Moto has now changed their stance on the possibility of a Froyo update.  Via Twitter…

To realize the call made by you guys decided to reassess the possibility of upgrading the Milestone w / Android 2.2

Now that’s some Android community power right there.  +1 to all of us!

Show some more android community power and get them to fix what they screwed up with froyo.

  • DrNoir

Why would I wait for them when I've had FroYo since I bought my Droid 2 months ago…

  • The350zWolf

Maybe VZW decided to evaluate the situation after reading all the comments about them on droid life ;)

Still don't get people's stance on thinking they they are owed this upgrade. You bought a phone with 2.01 or 2.1 or whatever, depending on when you purchased it, and were never promised anything more than that. I would be grateful that it is not still running 2.01. I don't see how it is a fail. Just seems like a bunch of blubbering and crying to me. When I bought my Droid I was never promised an upgrade to 2.1, I was never promised an upgrade to 2.2 either. It is nice that they did, and I appreciate it, but they in no way OWED me anything. When Windows 7 came out I didn't spam #WINFAIL all over the internet because they didn't upgrade me for free, even though they did upgrade many people (If you bought a computer between X and X dates Microsoft offered a free Windows 7 upgrade), because I didn't buy my computer with the promise of an upgrade. I understand the frustration of wanting something better, a new OS version in this case, but nobody promised you anything, and nobody owes you anything.

How would you feel paying $1000,00(that was the price when I bought mine) on a phone and suddenly the manufacturer decides the phone will receive the latest version of its OS all around the world except in your country?

Well, for one, i'd never pay a grand for a phone…

When they lock their phones so you have no option of updating on your own, I personally believe they have an obligation to upgrade your device for at least a year. Even two years would be fair considering that's the extent of most contracts.

    • jacobhartmann

I do believe that when buying a phone that's in a package proclaiming that it runs Flash it is more than fair to expect an update – in whatever form it might come – to make it possible to run Flash. This was the case for Milestone in Europe (at least Germany). That in combination with having a 2.01 device working fairly well and then recieving a 2.1 OTA update that for many more or less bricked the phone (reboots several timer pr. day, very poor call quality, alarm not working etc.) and at the same time getting the bootloader locked making it very hard and frustrating trying to get a ROM that will solve these problems/put 2.2 and make it run Flash. All in all I do not feel that it is unfair to think that Motorola “owes” us a 2.2 update – or at least free the bootloader to make it possible for the community to develop something on their own…

One comment… windows have updates automatically.
If microsoft update everyones windows for security and so you but yours… is that correct?

Nobody wants Android 3.0, just what is fair

    • Paulo Brazil

Brian, Motorola said that Milestone/Droid's browser would be Flash 10 ready. The only it come true is updating it to Android 2.2 (froyo). As Android is a free Operational System (OS), updates must not be sold. Of course, if the phone plataform (mainboard) does not support future OS upgrades it won't get it. But Milestone/Droid was born and created to be Flash Ready, period. It was not blubbering and crying to me. It was just fair our complain. Windows 7 is not a free OS like as Mac OS X. If your computer is not ready for this new OS, both Microsoft and Apple will release a pre-condition status. It will show you if your computer will/not be able to install it on your prior computer. But if it does, nice for you.

Luckily for us, Motorola international updated their schedule just one day before an event Motorola Brazil was holding to announce the Motorola Charm and two other non-android devices. I assume they weren't expecting that. After all the twitter, phone support and email rage, the journalists questioned then about the Milestone update on their event, and they stated this:

“In respect for the Milestone users, considering the great demand shown in the last days for the Android 2.2 update, Motorola informs that it's working with its partners to re-evaluate the plans of updating this product. We'll be back with news soon.”

  • jag28co

WOW. Maybe if all of us DX users complain about getting froyo we might be able to get it sooner.

    • kellex

      Amen.

    • WhereIsTony

I assume given the problems with the D1 rollout they want to get it right before they start roling it on thier flagship phones.

      Im from Brazil too.
Why did you post your comment in portuguese? Our friends of Droid Life will not be able to read it.

One thing you said in your comment I totally agree:
Brazilian people united made a big noise for Moto. It shows up Twitter comes as very handy tool for protests. Brazilians noticed that and thats why once a while you see a exclusive Brazilian topic in TT's.

Milestone is a very expensive mobile in here, almost USD 1,000.00, so yes its a big reason to protest.

      • JAG

        Excelent!! Brilliant!!

  • Timoh

Good job to the community for letting them hear your voice. Bad job to Motorola for waiting until people complained. Still very unimpressed with Motorola. Future practices might change my opinion… or solidify it.

It's my understanding the Milestone is new in latin america. Motorola released a “new” phone to an area and immediately decided it wasn't worthy of further software support. They were only swayed by the masses of angry consumers. What a joke.

Kellex needs to add a “dislike” button for the absolutely inane comments, like this.
