Verizon Offering DROID 2 and Incredible as Warranty Replacements?

We had heard directly from Asurion a few weeks back that they would be offering up Droid X and Incredible devices some time this summer to those making a claim on the original Droid, but today we have even better news.  We’ve heard from 2 readers, one who had the option to replace their 3rd refurbished Droid Eris with either a Droid 2 or an Incredible and another who was able to swap out a 4th refurb’d Droid 1 for a D2.  And we’re not talking insurance claims here, this is straight up warranty swapping.

Update:  I should point out that dropping your phone in a toilet will not get you a replacement.  That would be an insurance claim.  Warranty swaps are for phones that simply do not function properly even though you have done nothing to it.

Apparently the Verizon rep they both spoke with was as speechless as we all are at this point.

If anyone else is able to essentially upgrade to a newer device, let us know!

Cheers Phil and Tyler!

My Droid that I bought in May 2010 failed to charge completely. It was not the battery so the Verizon rep ordered a replacement under warranty. Received the new phone from Verizon and it was a Droid 2 with a note apologizing for the inconvenience. Due to a shortage in supply of Droid 1 replacements, they upgraded me to a new Droid 2. My old case did not fit the new phone, but the rep exchanged it for free, but the plastic screen cover I would have to pay for another. I had him peel it off the old phone and put it on the new one.

my droid screen got wet and had to go through asurion to get new one. After waiting for about a week and constant arguing with asurion and outstanding HELP from verizon customer service.i am getting droid incredible instead of droid on the 9/8. even though i wanted the original droid.

  • Jtoth09

i got a new droid 2 for my droid one and i could not be happier with the new onr the droid two rules

  • Mordechai Daniel

My headphone jack was faulty so I just got a warranty claim filed this morning. New phone scheduled to arrive in 2 days… I'm hoping for a D2! We shall see.

  • StephSchiff

My Droid stopped working and within 19 hours I was FedExed a free Droid 2! I will miss my Droid, but I love being able to have the Wifi Hotspot ($20 per month, optional, & can be cancelled at any time), 7 home screens, vastly improved keyboard, Flash, Swype comes installed but you have to turn it on in options (faster text entry), voice commands, talk to type (great for quickly texting & searching), it's noticeably faster, free calls with Skype, much better battery life, battery manager, etc. There is a learning curve, it's a pretty different set up.

did you call in to verizon and tell them, i want to get a new droid but i have the eris, im on my third..

  • Mab

Yes, I just received (surprise) a Droid 2 as a warranty replacement after my droid touch screen became non-responsive.

  • Diabuz

i called verizon this morning and are going to send me a replacement but i wasnt given any option to pick a droid 2 or incredible… hopefully i get a surprise in the mail in the following week =$

  • Keithroby

my original droid was making calls on its own…so they sent me the Droid 2. sorta lame i have to keep the original battery back. because the color scheme makes it look like i got it from the junk yard..

    • Jasper2

Just buy a new battery back from Verizon. They must have them in their service/parts department.

This is why Verizon is awesome!! This has happend to me twice, not for my droid but i had 4 LG dare replacements then I got upgraded to a Samsung Omnia had about 8 of those replaced and then got upgraded to a HTC Touch Pro2 all of those cost me about $40 and I got to keep all of them!….Prob not how its going with the droid replacements though. And I think my droid touch screen is about to mess up haha!! Thanks Verizon!

  • 505alaina

just received my warranty replacement for the moto droid 1 and guess what?! I received the droid 2! May I add it was only my 1st warranty exchange..

My droid 1 has been getting extremely hot and last night it got so hot that it froze for a few hours, even a soft rest it was still froze. Call Verizon today and they are sending me another phone but I have no idea what it will be. From the sound of his voice it seems like it will another Droid 1…Praying for a nice surprise like an incredible or a droid 2. Will let you know in 2 days.

Just wanted to chime in. First droid had an extremely loose screen and after dealing with it for few months i got really frustrated with it so sent it back for replacement. Replacement came and was worse then original, call Verizon they told me to go to a store so they can verify, Guy at store held it for 5 seconds before realizing it wasn't right and set me up with another replacement, telling me it will be refurbished and if i had any issues come see him. Today FedEx came, box felt odd, opened it up and a Droid2 was sitting in it….Still havent decided how I feel, I loved the Original Droid with Sapphire on it…so I am on the fence, they never mentioned an upgrade, and seemed hear about people getting upgrades after more than 3 defective phones not just 2

  • kmm

My Droid went into a reboot loop on Saturday, so I went to the store to have them look at it. This was the first time I have ever had a problem with it, and they still gave me the Droid 2 after they determined mine was a brick. The key was that I told them that I don't have any other phone when they said it was going to take 3+ days to have a replacement sent to me due to a backlog of Droids being loaded with Froyo. It's pretty sweet.

I've had the Eris since January and after the 2.1 update the thing just keeps getting hotter all the time, I'll be on the phone and it starts dialing the same number again while I'm on the phone call.
I called Verizon and they wanted to send me out another one and I I wanted to talk to a supervisor. They put me to tech support then and I asked again for a supervisor and I asked if I could replace the Eris with the Incredible.
The Supervisor told me that they are doing those replacements by request but he asked me to buy the extended battery for $50 which will go on my next bill because they lose money on the phones and make money on their sales. I agreed right away and my Incredible will be here in 2 days free shipping.
FYI: Always go to the top Supervisor first, and don't be afraid to ask. Verizon has great Customer Service and do alot for their customers…

  • Jpurcell5739

Just got my wife's Eris upgraded to a d1after her 4th phone

  • Supra_2nr

After having 5 droids as replacements, I updated to froyo and it killed my ability to connect to my corporate email at work… I talked to all 3 levels of support at verizon and 2 levels of support at motorola… which they told me to download touchdown to get my emails (LOL) So i yelled at them, and low and behold… my droid 2 came in today! Yes!

  • Chevyg

Just got an Dinc for a DROID 1 warranty replacement

  • Marco Quezada

Im on my 3rd DROID. I just keep getting a refurbished one. I should be getting it in a couple of days. I dont know what they were going to send me. I find out soon.

    • http://twitter.com/richardsonadm Adam Richardson

i'm on #5 and receiving #6 refurb tomorrow. It all depends on where you are located and the closest warehouse of refurbs are. If the closest one to you is out of stock then you get another device. they'll keep sending you refurbs until the stock is out. I even asked why i wasn't offered a different device and it totally amazing how you get different answers from every rep to supervisor.

  • Antwaun84817

I got my x today. And im loving it.

I was having trouble with my droid 1 dropped calls (It was over 10% of my calls) after 25 calls, 15 hours and over 75 different customer service people they decided that I had been through enough and upgrade my droid 1 to a Incredible. It will be here tomorrow. In all honesty I didnt wanna get rid of my droid, but the stock is so low I refused to wait a week to get a new phone.

  • Mystic_wizard_83

I just got a Droid 2 replacement after I took my Droid into a verizon store after I crashed it while rooting. Got everything back to normal after a hard reset, but the phone would not connect or sync with google. Tech support figured that it was the 2.2 update that caused the problem.

  • Buckgrad

Got my 2nd Droid replacement today. Slider was broken. One end loose and wouldn't lock open or closed. Called VZW customer service. She transferred me to tech support. He understood the problem and asked to put me on hold…came back to say that they had no original Droid replacements in stock, and no Droid 2 replacements either. But he did say he could send me a replacement Droid X. It arrives on Wednesday. I think it's just the luck of whether or not they have replacements in stock at the time of your call, and who you talk to. Good luck guys.

  • Bzchickin

I got mine replaced recently (yesterday) and it was just a plain refurbished, it seemed, droid 1

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jamie-Howard/822798396 Jamie Howard

I got the original droid A855 for my replacement today. No upgrade :(

  • Cory Buchanan

sweet, my wife has a droid eris and it is a total POS lately, deleted all her apps, pictures and everything and the battery is dying and phone is slow.

  • Leighton0286

I know it isn't the same…but I just got a D2 today after making an insurance claim on my droid….603 dollars for 89 dollars? yes please.

  • Mcrutchf

If they send you a new replacement doesn't it up/renew your contract?

    • Frank Ortiz

No, if it's a refurbished or they upgrade you because they don't have any in stock and/or you've had so many replacents that they give you a comparable phone, it doesn't renew the contract.

  • Frank Ortiz

On the phone with VZW right now. She's asking her manager. First she said that I would have to wait for new shipments to come in… I said that's unacceptable. Let's see… Hopefully they can replace my droids to D2. My wife and I are having problems with both.

    • Frank Ortiz

Frank here… No dice… They offered send a new Droid 1 (when they have then in stock) and/or early upgrade to anything else. Will wait for the replacement, sell it and then buy something. Droid X? Maybe…

  • Dagerman33

I guess its a luck of the draw , in both cases warranty or insurance. a few days ago i went to the verizon store and they swapped out my phone with another droid, they said that they still had around 1300 droids in the warehouse , and that after they were gone they would be replacing them with a comparable model. As with the insurance , they are still offering the eris and ally, along with the droid but that is on back order ……

  • Alex

I want to try to get a D2 as a replacement! How do i do so. After manually updating to froyo 2.2, everything got messed up. My apps disappear every time I press home. I went to verizon and they said they were going to push an update sometime next week starting on monday, thats apperently going to ''fix'' all the issues. I dont want another update, i want a new phone! My headphone jack aint working properly and my camera is messed up! They dont understand, how do i convince them to replace my phone!

  • Buckgrad

Anyone who has received a replacement Droid in the last couple of days: Did your replacement come with 2.2 already loaded? I'm expecting my 2nd replacement Monday, and the Verizon Rep said it might come “new in box” and would have 2.2 pre-loaded. Hoping this might be an indication of acDroid 2. :)

  • Jesh

did anybody got offered to have the droid x for your droid 1? cause if they do offer that then I am gonna have to get real clever and make my d1 to have some sort of manufacture defect!

  • Gbarnwell

my first gen Droid randomly turns itself off. Not a battery issue, running stock 2.2. You don't even know the hassles I've had trying to get them to switch it out. Here is the latest:

Friday, VZ in store guy tells me first that I don't have “Advanced Task Killer” and that was it. I told him that I have “Task Killer” paid version, and he goes on and on about how I need ATK instead. He then installs it from the marketplace without asking me. then he runs it, sees nothing crazy running then tells me two other tales.

First, I must have a rogue app turning my phone off. I invite him to look around my apps, I run real lean. mostly native apps or google apps. He's not having it. He then shifts gears by telling me it is VZ policy that if the problem can't be replicated in store, they can't do anything about it. Since it turns off randomly, I can't make it replicate and tell him that I would be happy to leave him my phone for observation he says no and walks off leaving me with a sheepishly apologetic rep.

From what I can tell, you can't even get a a first gen as a replacement for legitimate issues. I thought about calling VZ directly, but I don't know if I can take any more idiocy.

First I was told my phone had a ROM on it by a rep when I took it in (it was running 2.2 and he said he didn't recognize the icons)

Secondly, told it needed a hard reset. Done, and annoying.

    Then, battery replacement.

Then the ATK and that nonsense. Is there a VZ store anywhere in LA that has a competent person working there who can help me?

    • Amandalynn636

I had I rep over the phone tell me that my apps were causing mine to force close. On random browser sites and random apps. So his fix was factory reset and to keep all 3rd paty apps off to see if that solved it. This guy was doing everything in his power to keep from replacing it and he never waivered. So I called back, spoke with someone different, she asked if it started doing it after the last update, I said yes, I will have a Droid 2 on Tuesday.

Try calling them and talking to someone else.

  • john

I called, didn't even ask about a upgrade and my d1 replacement is on the way. If its anything like my previous D1 replacement, I will be calling again in another week. Maybe after I finally say something about an upgrade they will. I'm not too concerned about it though

  • Jasonforcer

I “upgraded” today the rep was moren than willing to send the Incredible to be overnight. Man free upgrade that's awesome!

    • john

jeez, how did you convince them of that? what number replacement were you on?

  • carterlive

this works, after my 5th replacement i call vzw, and told them i kept getting a fc issues, and my droid 2 is on the way now, although they did offer a new droid 1, i replied and said i'll cancel b/c of all the issues, so they said droid 2

  • Blackmagick20

I went in to a VZW store yesterday because my Droid was overheating and not charging. This makes my 7th faulty Droid since April. The store had me call customer tech support and explain the issue to them to see if I could get a replacement phone. Nothing was said about switching to a different model until I asked if I could have the D2, DI, or DX instead. The rep told me they didn't have any refurb replacements of the D2 yet because it was so new or she would have gladly sent me one. She also said I couldn't have the DI or the DX because they weren't close enough to the original Droid with the features they have. She then suggested that I could switch to the Devour or the Ally. I quickly just accepted the original Droid as a replacement over either one of those awful phones. I'm now on Droid #8 in 4 months…

  • Azilla

I just got my replacement droid Monday, sent a droid with loose screen plus screen doesn't always respond to touch :(

  • xmetl

ok someone please tell me, what should i do with my Droid 1 in order to get verizon to replace it with a Droid 2

  • OFD

I am on my second refurbished droid, and i spoke to two reps about this today. One of them told me that they will consider replacing a phone with alternate devices after the 2nd refurbished one breaks. The stories you mentioned line up with that policy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chriskimbrough Christopher Kimbrough

Just tried this using an issue I had with my first D1. I have had 2 replacement and the tech support rep offered me a HTC Incredible. I accepted.

  • jesh

how are yalls phone goes through so many manufactures defects in so little time. I have had the droid ever since it came out and never had any problems to it what so ever!

    • http://twitter.com/richardsonadm Adam Richardson

well i'm on #5 for the exact same thing. i've seem to find a hardware problem only in mine though since verizon can't seem to find this problem in there database. my headphone jack is messed up, when headphones or plugged in or even auxiliary cable, it gives like a crackling sound, like it's not making a good connection.

  • Justsayitanyway

what about a lost or stolen phone? Just curious :)

    • balthuszar

personally, if i was verizon, i'd set it up that you'd have to send in the old phone and they'd send you the replacement…to lose on purpose or say it's stolen when it's not is what makes it harder for us to out for a replacement for legitimate issues

  • OFD

I need some help. I want to take my droid into verizon for them to look at the headphone jack connection. Will i need to unroot before I bring it in? If so, will simply flashing the non-rooted 2.2 stock Rom in rom manager take care of that or will i need to do something else?

    • http://twitter.com/richardsonadm Adam Richardson

i had the same exact issue, but yes you will need to unroot before letting Verizon even touching your phone or they wont help you. i do believe you can use rom manager to unroot you. just make sure you don't have clockworkmod recovery afterwards

    • C Henry94

Just power off your phone, power it back on while holding the letter x on your keypad, let go of power button after you see the M (motorola sign), then after the triangle with the exclamation point shows, press the camera button then the volume up button, and go to option reset to factory settings (or close to those words), this will bring your phone back to the original factory settings, but with the froyo 2.2.

  • Antwaun84817

My droid x will be here Monday. After 8 replacements I finally get what I feel I deserve after numerous droid 1 replacements.

    • http://www.facebook.com/NikoAnthonyBasile Niko Anthony Basile

WTH! How did you get one so fast? He told me i had to wait till the 7th…

  • Rumsone

Those verizon. People only gave me another friggin droid

  • http://www.facebook.com/NikoAnthonyBasile Niko Anthony Basile

Guess what? Supervisor called me back a minute ago. He is shipping out a brand new droid 2 for a saturday delivery (tomorrow). He initially offered me a droid 2, Droid x or incredible. Droid x is on backorder till the 7th. I wasn't trying to wait. Although he did say that if i ran into any problems with my droid 2 he said to call him on his direct number for an exchange!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UNXG2SD6MNRBMXCBGQJQGN5MJU Mimi Park

where are you located to have had this done (where the supervisor is so “accommodating”?)

      • http://www.facebook.com/NikoAnthonyBasile Niko Anthony Basile

I live in MA. In my experience i have noticed that the sales/tech representative are trained not to budge. Be very persistent and ask for the supervisor. VERY PERSISTENT. If they say he cant do anything then continue to be persistent because in all seriousness they will issue a replacement. Try it.
