Rumor: Froyo OTA Update for DROID Delayed Until August 12th? (Updated)

There have been plenty of rumors over the last few days which suggest that Verizon/Motorola put a stop to the current Froyo OTA update FRG01B for the Droid because of some unknown bug.  Well we received word from a source today that the next expected date for a big rollout is August 12th.  We’re sure seeing that date quite a bit aren’t we?  Droid training.  Droid 2 release date.  What else can we possibly pack into next Thursday?

Like I said, still no word as to what caused the delay, but we’re now fully expecting FRG22 to be the official release when this thing starts poppin’ again.

Update: MyDroidWorld is reporting that all FRG builds of Froyo will be pulled as it appears to not be playing well with Flash.  I guess you can throw out August 12th then?  (Link)

Update 2: We’re receiving reports that the update has been halted but has not been pulled.  It should resume again on Monday.

We’ll be sure to fill you in as we find out more or if anything becomes offiicial.  And be sure to let us know if you still receive FRG01B.

I'm not sure why all of the sites out there think there is a technical problem with Flash and FroYo. My Droid World has a pretty clear post — there's a royalties and rights issue (meaning money disagreement) between Adobe and Google going on — not a technical problem…

Kellex, the Droid world is following this bad description of the problem you've got outlined above. Perhaps update the article to reflect what's really going on?

  • Sean

Seriously…can someone with FRG01B open up their messaging app, then open a conversation, then rotate your device into landscape and open the keyboard. Now hit the back button twice to get back to the home screen.

Does it not take a few seconds for your icons to show up?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Maynard/100001145083030 Jonathan Maynard

Sry, I don't seem to have that problem. My icons are already there… no visible delay

      • Sean

Did you have your phone in portrait mode first, then open up the messaging app, then flip the keyboard out, then back out to the home screen again?

  • thebourbonnflip

all you people having problems with FRG01B, i dont really get it…mine is running perfectly, i have no problems at all, my icons never disappeared, there is no delay, and tonight i got my battery lasting 24hours. maybe it's cuz i used it minimally but for those losing battery while on standby i dont really see a problem..i DONT use task killers because i see no need to use one, i also read on androidcentral that froyo and task killers dont go well with eachother, the apps in the background are necessary for the android system i believe, and when they need to be closed it will close itself., FroYo works well for my droid.

    • http://www.facebook.com/cory.britt1 Cory Britt

Me too…no problems at all…I love froyo and I'm running the newest jrummy rom, lithium, and it hasn't had any problems, in fact, it's been one of the best roms I have ever used.but I have always liked jrummy's roms, I really like the scripts, color themes and his all around style and lithium takes the cake for me

    • http://twitter.com/Dirtball_Rotten Dirtball Rotten

co-sign 100% i use advanced task killer but i dont let it run in the background i kill apps kill task killer and keep it moving. i am loving 2.2 no problems at all

  • Sean

Am I the only one who thinks FRG01B is slow?

When backing out of the browser, messaging app, etc back to my basic home screen, all the icons are gone and it takes like 5 seconds for them to pop back up.

Many times just clicking on things is slow as well. The 'click' sound even is delayed. I can open an app, have it appear, and then 2 seconds later the click sound will finally happen.

    This never happened with ESE81.

    • thebourbonnflip

If you're experiencing a slower droid then something else is causing it other then the update. Possibilities: You are running a task killer, you have virus protection. Remove those if you do.

      • Sean

My friend has a rooted 2.2 rom and I tried it with his too. I opened up the messaging app, flipped it around and pulled out the keyboard, then back out of it and the icons on the home screen took forever to load as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jtwildman John T. Wildman

Hmmm… honestly, I did the manual update and I'm not impressed. FROYO is ok, but hardly worth getting excited about. My battery life stinks even logging out of the Facebook app I loaded the same day( plus the update they had soon after). So not real sure it's the culprit.
My wife is still running 2.1 and zero problems. While she is in internet bliss my phone sits on my nightstand charging! I'd have to run 2 batteries to keep mine going like hers. Mine use to be great, till impatience got the best of me and I downloaded the 2.2 update…. trust me when I say ” I want my old phone back”

    • Porschephile2k3

You forgot to mention that the phone really heats up after using it for quite awhile even without that Facebook update. I read on some forum that they changed the API for Froyo so that there are hardly any inactive (cached) applications which means they run constantly and the background. No matter how you kill them with a task killer, they keep coming back. People here will tell you not to use one, but having those apps on standby in the background does eat up your battery!

I, too, want my Eclair back, and Froyo can take a hike!

      • Smr561

I close my aps under “running services” and they keep popping back up even befrore I finish scrolling the list. I never had that problem before the update. Could this be due to auto updates? Also, some of my aps now have images overlapping each other when I scroll (aCar, USA Today and a few others).

        • http://www.facebook.com/jtwildman John T. Wildman

I have tried everything I can think of to kill the apps, but yeah they keep coming back… which is the problem I believe. I would like to remove 2.2 and just go back to 2.1 , which worked great. Lol early bird doesn't always get the worm. Is it as simple as removing the file with 2.2 on my phone ? Sorry not a techy… or will that totally screw it up when I reboot?

          • Lee

You have to reflash a stock 2.1 rom with a stock recovery. Or if you made a backup when you updated you can just restore your update!

          • Lee

Restore your backup is what I meant.

    • BLB

@JTW, same here. I went to Settings > Accounts & sync, and turned off “background data.” Seems to have fixed my battery life problems with Froyo (2.2). Consider trying that, and letting us know if that solves your problem, too.

Given that same have this battery life issue and some don't, I have a theory. (Just a theory.) I suspect that Froyo changed something about how the background-data function works, and because of that, some apps that used to behave themselves now overuse the phone, never letting the phone go to sleep. (Even with the screen switched off, my phone was getting really hot — suggesting that it was still working hard at something while sitting in my pocket.)

Other apps I guess continue to behave themselves, which could explain why some folks don't have any battery life problem with Froyo.

I have considered testing this by doing a hard reset, turning on “background data,” and seeing whether my battery life is normal. If it is, then I can add my apps back one by one, looking for the culprit(s). I have not tried this yet, though. I turned off background data. I uninstalled Weatherbug (which I guess could be the culprit), since without “background data” turned on, Weatherbug is useless. I manually refresh my Exchange email inbox when I'm checking messages.

My interim solution is not great, since I want background-data to work, but it's made the phone completely usable again — and before turning background data off, my phone was worthless.

Hope this information helps you, or someone.

      B.

      • Anonymous

Ty very much. I will try your suggestions. I am hoping there is a fix or something as simple as waiting for some of my apps to get an update that work a little nicer with 2.2

  • BigDaddyEllison

Seriously, people. I am as anxious for new updates as anyone else and in fact did the manual update earlier this week, but there is no reason to get so upset about it being delayed because of issues. Have you had a MS, Blackberry, or iPhone before? Did you ever get multiple updates to the OS in less than 12 months? Google is trying to work with a dozen vendors to update millions of phones. It has never been done before like this and it isn't simple. This has gone much smoother than the first MS or Blackberry updates. Have some patience, enjoy the phone. You'll get the updates when the new release is stable. The problem is that people complain when they don't get updates, and those same people complain when there is the slightest bug.

  • Ben

Is there anyone on here that can confirm that the OTA update is still rolling out? I mean, someone on here has to have gotten the update recently if it's still rolling out and hasn't been pulled or halted, as people claim.

    • Barlog

That's what I was thinking. I haven't seen one person say they received the update OTA at all this whole week! If you have received the OTA update this week please give give a shout out :-)

      • thebourbonnflip

im talkin to this person on motorola's facebook, and he said that he has received the OTA a couple days ago and it was indeed FRG01B.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SVD6E6BDA22J5OXJXEITBFLREQ billy

That could b bc most people on thes fourms are either rooted or did the manual update.

        • Anonymous

Good call Billy…maybe they’re trying to send them out but no one is ‘receiving’ them, lol…guess that might count as technical difficulties ;-)

        • Barlog

Yeah that’s true, but last 2.1 OTA update disaster we had the same options to manual update or root but a ton of people were poping up on here saying they got it OTA. I guess everyone learned from last update to just root or manual update then to rely on Verizon,Google, and Motorola ;-)

    • Kellex

More than likely it won't happen until the beginning of next year. There has been an issue with copyrights and specific pieces of equipment (i.e. phones). If you want the update you will have to load it yourself.

      • Ben

I don't really understand how there could be an issue with copyrights? Could you maybe elaborate on what exactly you mean and where you've gotten this information?

  • Teazey

I got this off the Verizon website. http://support.vzw.com/how_to_use/droid_upgrade

  • Evermour

We'll get froyo when pigs start flying. We'll get gingerbread when we all turn into dinos.

  • Aferrazzo

so if i manually updated to FRG01B is my warranty void or am i ok, can Verizon tell if i manually updated or if it came ota, i really would love an answer also do you think there will be an update coming to me if i already have froyo???

thanks guys i know its a noob question but i am kind of freaking out over all this

    droid live for life !!!!!

    • thebourbonnflip

dont freak out…there are people who has gotten the OTA from verizon and it is FRG01B, so if you manually did it, pretend that you were the lucky few from OTA, just remember when you are done doing it manually, delete the update.zip from the SDcard and you'll be good to go.

  • Scuff

Am I the only one who's getting tired of this sh*t? I love my Droid and all, but I refuse to wait around like a dog waiting for scraps from my masters table. Maybe today? Perhaps tomorrow? Possibly next Tuesday?

My God, it's a friggin software update, not a cure for cancer.

    • Michael_NM

+1000 “My God, it's a friggin software update, not a cure for cancer.”

      Damn you! I can't stop laughing…

      • MrMarcus

LMAO! That was funny. But I want my 2.2! just liek the rest of these geeks.

    • mtkregs

*clearing my throat sound*…Froyo is the cancer! It's on WebMD…look it up.

Ever since it's “leak” into the wild, it has been quickly spreading. Ironically, some of those whom didn't get infected conventionally, proceeded to manually force the infection into their systems. It has been responsible for shortening time that infected parents should spend with their children or each other. It is surely the cause of many broken homes. Many have speculated about the origin of the “leak”. Some have attached their own names to it before pushing it out on the streets. It has caused dissension and mud slinging in the community. Some have created their own mutations of it and made it available for distribution to the frothy-mouthed masses. It is a far more efficient and multi-functional disease than that which caused Snow White to suffer her fate. Therefore, it is evil and will quickly consume you entirely.

For me…I'm going to set it aside for the day….go to the park to ride bikes with my girl, take my kid fishing, BBQ some steak kabobs on the grill, enjoy a few/several cold pops, and take in a movie tonight. I'm going to do all of this without the assistance of the disease. Wish me luck!

  • sdierks

doesn't this seem like 2.1 all over again. we should have learned by now to believe when we see it. we should just give up on moto / vzw to give us updates when they say they will. They said late July, sometime in June and theyve already missed that date.

    • thebourbonnflip

yea it is just like the 2.1, like when i found out that came out..i couldn't wait so i manually installed, and i did the same with this…i found no problems.

  • Chris Nimon

Now i found an article on current and future of gorilla glass. Is AOL pulling their news from my local paper? lol
    http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/company-news/

  • belsonc

According to the article Kellex linked to, they pulled the update because GOOG and Adobe are arguing over licensing and money and the like – so I guess we'll see how this plays out…

  • rockymtnhigh

Amazing how Verizon/Moto can screw up an OS that was working fine (i.e., FRB84) with whatever of their own crap they put in it. Glad I am rooted. :-)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O2734GY35AU7HRVC7I2H3SXIXQ Michael

Pulled as in an ota back to 2.1 ¿

    • DroidXfactor

Pulled as in I haven't rooted my droid x. I am just worried that I will not be able to UNroot after I root…

      • skltr21

once you're rooted you will have no reason to be unrooted……. why would you need to un-root???

        • DroidXfactor

I am worried about not being able to get the FroYo OTA update…Root won't prevent this??

          • skltr21

if you're simply just rooted you would still get the update. if you have a custom recovery, you won't get the ota. but like i said….. once you root you can have to ota update plus a better rom with a better kernel to overclock your droid, etc……….. so why would you root and then want to un-root just to get an update that you can get while being rooted???? =) you dont have to be un-rooted to get the update. you just wont get the ota update. but the update is the update no matter how you get it.

  • DroidXfactor

**OFF TOPIC** Anyone used EASY ROOT on the Droid X yet?? I bought this app this morning after seeing the post on DL, but haven't 'pulled' the trigger yet. My biggest question is does the UNroot function work only for the original droid or does it also work for the Droid X as well? I want to be able to unroot for the OTA update to FroYo… THANKS.

    • guest

Unless Im mistaken, being rooted wont stop the OTA update, its custom recovery that will stop that.

  • D_nkv

hey does any one know how to root the 2.2 ota? i was interested in rooting my phone but don't know how to.

    • Bxrider117

I posted this under the wrong response. The One click root in the market for $.99 lets you root Froyo.

  • Justin

    ROOT, problem solved!

  • nick

i just called verizon and they told me the “official update” is set for the 18th.I dont believe them but thats what they told me

  • Towelie420

“Still no word on what caused the delay.”
Well please allow me to explain: Verizon is absolutely incapable of delivering software updates for ANY device in a timely manor. 2.2 for Droid will not be seen until October. Droid X probably not until November. As for Droid's 2.2 not playing nice with Flash? It's always going to be choppy. The Droid doesn't have enough RAM, plain and simple.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SVD6E6BDA22J5OXJXEITBFLREQ billy

Plz allow me to explain there is no delay.don't believe every rumor u hear. The roll out is still hapening it will end the 13th some sites have nothing better to post so they make things up

    • Jgenerator

It's manner, not manor. I'd give your post a bit more credence if you actually knew anything about this subject, but it's pretty clear you don't.

  • Slagg3r

lies verizon them selfs are still pushing the update call and ask them your self. These rumors need to stop !!!!

  • Naeubanks

FRG builds HAVE NOT BEEN PULLED. FRG01B is the official Android 2.2 for the Motorola Droid was released on tuesday, was halted wednesday because many users were calling in because Flash player was not included but then resumed after an internal memo was sent out informing vzw reps on what to tell those who call in about flash. It has since resumed and is rolling out in 10,000 devices at a time stages starting in larger areas and should be complete by the 15th.

    • Anonymous

And you got your info where?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Wallace/100000161546934 Kevin Wallace

Hey jus got a quick question about Bugless Beast baseband update from the Rom Manager! I am running FRGO1B from Rom Manager, I want to instail the baseband to my phone is anything going to happen to my phone if i do so? and do i back up and wipe data and cache? any help would be great!

    • skltr21

first, dont apply the new baseband unless you are getting bad signal. second if you are going to update the baseband you will want to wipe data a cache. and ALWAYS make a backup before you do anything new to your phone. that's just a good rule of thumb =)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SVD6E6BDA22J5OXJXEITBFLREQ billy

This is not true the rollout has not been stopped, I talked to vzw support rollout will end on the 13th. Frg22 is an older build frgb1 is the official build so these rumors need to stop.

  • Twalker611

Off subject, but need some help from this site's great community… been a long time reader but never posted.

I'm new to this rooting thing, so bear with me please. So I got sick and tired of all this drama with the Froyo OTA, so today I decided to root and do it on my own. I downloaded the Easy Root app from the market and rooted from stock 2.1. Once rooted I went and downloaded and installed the Rooted FRG01B Froyo by Pete. I imagine this was the right one to do since I was now rooted on stock 2.1.

So I flashed the recovery thing, and then I installed this ROM. I clicked the backup and wipe data and cache, as it said in the post since I was NOT coming from another Froyo build. When my phone rebooted I had lost all of my apps that I had downloaded for some reason. Now this would not normally be an issue, as I would just redownload all of them. I still had the purchased apps in my downloads section… with one exception… Easy Root. Since I am not extremely tech savvy this is how I got to this point, and if I ever needed to unroot that's what I was going to use. Since this app has been pulled from the market it's not in my purchased section of downloads. My question is what did I do wrong to lose ALL of my apps, and with the loss of Easy Root (now unavailable in market) what do I do if I need to unroot or something?

Thank you guys so much for any help or guidance you can provide.

    • http://twitter.com/wmsco1 wmsco1

When you wipe you wipe all. You can use Backup Pro or Titanium backup from market free is limited. ROM Manger has stock files for going back to stock

      • Twalker611

Thank you. I have read from many people on here that I would never wanna go back to stock anyways, but if I have to go in the Verizon store don't I need to go back to stock? I am already LOVING the speed of Froyo. I'm gonna make a serious effort to learn all this stuff and get my Droid hooked up. I want to overclock it and all that good stuff. Make my loser I*hone friends jealous.

        • http://twitter.com/wmsco1 wmsco1

Yes Don't want to void your warranty

  • MrMarcus

so if i manually install 2.2, will i still receive the official ota? and if not how can i get it to get the office ota 2.2?

    • guz_1115

yes, you should get the OTA if you manually installed!

  • JG_69

If Droid 2 is supposed to ship on 8/12 AND it comes with Android 2.2 onboard, then why can't they put that build on Droid 1? Or does this mean the release date for Droid 2 gets pushed back indefinitely too?

  • Luckryr1981

From what I can tell, FRG01B is working great on my Droid. I should just root while I have the chance, so many roms though, which one is the best??!

    • The_Other_Ray

Try either lithiummod or sapphire 1.0. Both are very fast and stable roms. The most painstaking part is deciding on the theme.

  • http://twitter.com/TR3VOR2012 Trevor Gilmore

    root while you still can!

  • Samzzz

    Just ROOT! :)

  • arirang

conspiracy theory here…they could be patching root to stop tethering without paying verizon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1553700108 Jason Bourdeau

I'm not having any problems with flash.

  • mhoe

what about those of use that installed FRG01B? would this latest version install right over this one?

    • http://twitter.com/TR3VOR2012 Trevor Gilmore

      yup

  • Zach

They are just now figuring out Flash doesn't work?…. what have they been doing all this time.

    • Anonymous

Does seem a little strange I mean isn’t the D2 shipping with 2.2 installed?? Does this mean every single one of those phones already mass produced and ready for sale are all gonna be defective as well?? Didn’t they use the same build for the update they used for the new D2’s?? I mean Im already running and happy with froyo but don’t understand all the confusion and chaos associated with this round of updates…There will be water if God wills it

  • JosueD

So, According to MyDroidWorld, Their gonna pull the Froyo Update due to “Flash Problems” !? Why don't they just fix it?

      Lol, good point. Sort of.

Flash is used in many ways by many sites–including whole sites with no or rudimentary alternatives. Even many Droid and Android (heck and i*phone) oriented sites use flash. And few use a streamlined file (small) or air well, in the course of an average users day.

So many sites are built with little concern for mobile/etc (or resources) that flash on droid is painfully slow. And not all that friendly. Blocks navigation of browser, and so on.

It also seems even browsers like xscope that have alternative to turn it off have some issue when loading sites with it. A hang, a black screen for a second, etc persist.

Does flash CS? Do a better job? Or Maybe if all developers would use air that would help… $$$$ I think aybe an open source alternative to sharing this sort of media would help even more… so long as it could be completely ignored when user turns it off…

And even when you use smaller light .swf’s or use alternative content flash lite versions or andorid handles it poorly.. white screens with download arrows instead of alternative content.

Not sure of the solutions, and I know flash that I have used is still in beta, so maybe something will change (or they’re trying to change it last minute?)

But on the flash end of things I can and have done without. Except for Kongregate games and known decent sites with dedicated full screen flash games mobile friendly. I turn on the flash and have a blast.

  • ohiobuckeye7

I upgraded to FRG22 and my flash is working just fine. I guess when you didn't have it and now you have it, you wouldn't know what you were missing.

Pandora seems to be working. The audio quality is not the greatest. I had a problem with the audio sounding like someone was slowing down a record. After reinstalling and adding the 928 Droid Black Glass theme, it improved.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Maynard/100001145083030 Jonathan Maynard

Same here and no problems. Now I can finally get my bangedup.net fix anytime I want

  • fuqaduq

I'm not sure what theyre talking about with issues about the 2.2 frgo1b not playing nice with flash. I manually updated to frg01b and installed the flash .apk and it works fine no battery drainage or anything

    stock droid no roms

    • Gleff49

me too, manual updated on Wed 8-4-10 and grabbed the Flash that nite and everything is running perfectly. I LOVE IT ALL !

      • NathanM

Same here…no problems with flash. Kongeragte works fine

  • mjfbush

    Oh my god no.

  • Rizzidy

    No surprise here.

    • Rizzidy

Really, they should just skip it and go to Gingerbread.

      • Bxrider117

Check the forums, I saw that the one click root in the market for $.99 lets you root Froyo 2.2.

        • Rizzidy

What does that have to do with anything?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=761227657 Chelsea Owen- Kraft

I had to go to verizon yesterday and asked about the 2.2 update and the told me is was being sent out to each phone randomly and it wasnt pushed back

    • Mikecole20

      lol what a joke

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=717199571 Jason Lassourreille

Odd, I was actually thinking flash was faster on foyo sapphire rom. Maybe by “appears to not be playing well” they mean “working better than expected”? It's odd to think how many revisions they have created only to find out after they roll out that something is wonky. Maybe it's a data problem that's clocking the bandwidth pipe?

  • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

    :-(

  • Thehunter2834

Just saw one of my customer come into the store with some droid issues, and he had froyo. Told me that it showed up two days ago, the only customer I have seen with it. And no root or custom rom.

    • Sigmundroid

How would you know its not rooted?
I changed my ID to say FCKIP4 (thanks to a poster here) forgot the name, but props!

  • acquaz10

After updating its buggy as hell. They should fix it.

    • sog805

I agree…now my pandora sounds like crap and I use it all the time!

      • acquaz10

The most annoying bug I found is that sometimes when I click messaging, it launches something in my recent apps. Extremely annoying.

  • Ksizzle9

well i was also told that the start of the X rollout would start on that date bc they want it to coincide with the D2 launch, i myself was in best buy today for tax free weekend here in Tennessee today and played with the D2, downloaded Linpack and Quadrant, 2300 average on quadrant, 42-48 on linpack, i cannot for wait to get this on my x, it will be the fastest phone out son.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KHI4N5WM55UHS45NJ73T63DOF4 david

Well there was a blog yesterday sayin the X was getting it early septembe. It would make sense that we would get it the same time as the droid 2, wouldn't u think? Isn't it pretty much the same phone with a qwerty keyboard and smaller screen

He's FOS talked to associates, employees from Hickory Hollow all the way down to Brentwood
and they all don't have a dummy phone let alone the actual phone.

Yes I have no idea why the X would be getting 2.2 a month after the droid2 (with almost identical hardware) will launch with it next week… makes no sense, and don't give me that “they want a reason for ppl to get a droid2″ crap, the X and D2 are different phones for different audiences, there is no reason they wouldn't get 2.2 out on their flagship phone ASAP… i'm just bitter cas I had a D1 rooted with froyo for a month and now I have an X with 2.1… GIVE ME 2.2 VZW COME ON.. i'm sick of my roomate with his evo rubbing it in my face everyday

      • Ksizzle9

i agree, i am suprised that the X was actually the flagship over the D2 but it is, and i saw the D2 with my own 2 eyes running Froyo. which means that it is out there and it is ready, and if it launching the 12th then they have already mass produced this phone that they say is launching with froyo, with that said i dont understand why they would delay this. in my opinion i understand that they want to D2 to be the first to LAUNCH with froyo, and even if we got it OTA right now the D2 would still be the first phone to “launch” with froyo. Just as you im not overly happy about our wait but it is a phone. also a phone that i paid $600 for. We will have it sooner than later either way so i guess i dont have much choice in the matter but lets hope that we see it soon. Droid-X-Life FTW!!!!!

    • Ksizzle9

haha i was there when the door opened nd bc it was tax free weekend and i went to get a computer for school, the mobile part had no one around, first he confirmed that it would be on the 12th and then i saw the dummy(phone), and talked for a few minutes and he whipped on out. seemed identical to the x software wise, but it was alot less buggy. yes the quadrant scores were high and linpack was good, i looked for the easy root app so i could try and root the phone in store(could not find it on the market). unfortunately he wouldnt let me use my x to video and prove this but OOOOHHHHH man i cant wait til the X gets froyo.

Update: An acronym meaning: Useless Promise. Damn All The Excuses.

When used by Moto or VZ, update should be called a made-up date.

Also, see “soon.” An adverb meaning in a short time; shortly.

When used by Moto or VZ, soon means “We don’t know.”

Sorry to those who read this before.

    • Sigmundroid

Michael I have to say I feel great empathy and sorrow for you and others
who seem to wait on hand and foot for updates/news concerning their cell phone
and its incremental additions…You put so much credence and priority in these
types of things. In the end its your right to do so, but it seems to me it isn't that important.

If you understand the way business works all dates are intended (intentionally) put
out there. Basic psychology 101 bud.

If I am Verizon Wireless and I'm about to release the Droid 2?
I will make the Droid 1 owners wait until after that phone is released to release
the proper adobe flash plug-in and the proper 2.2 build via OTA, and manually.

Then? I would want to make the Droid 1 owners upgrade to the Droid 2.
The update is guaranteed not to come out before the Droid 2's launch, which is why
a test build (by Verizons own words) was released before the final build.

It makes good business sense to do this, and will make people impatient.
(it works) and it is working as planned. Everything is planned.

So what you are really saying is that Verizon and Motorola are using Jedi Mind Tricks on their customers?

        • Barlog

LOL! “These aren’t the Droids your looking for.” ;-)

          • droidboy

Sigmundroid do you work for apple because you have that kind of mind set.

      • Anonymous

Yeah but why should us Droid X users have to wait? X should have LAUNCHED with Froyo. Just a complete failure

Sigmund, my id and ego are having a hard time agreeing on a response. My super-ego suggests that I should keep it in the gracious spirit of Droid-Life. So here it goes.

I respectfully suggest that you’ve demonstrated fundamental attribution error when you offer empathy and sorrow. You can’t emphasize without understanding, and I don’t need sorrow. My comment was as an attempt at satire. As for the issue of waiting for VZ to do something, this site is a great antidote for that (e.g. rooting, manual updates, betas).

Now, let’s talk business. What you’re suggesting has some merit. However, if that’s actually what VZ intended, they’ve executed very poorly. Why would they intentionally begin upgrading the Droid with a FRG01B? If they wanted to follow your suggestions, they simply should have announced that the Droid would receive 2.2 in early fall, and released the Droid 2 in late August.

Regarding the release date for Droid 2, it seems like a marketing faux pas to me. The Droid X was virtually sold out on release day (7/15). VZ is now offering all of those purchasers an option to get the Droid 2 with no penalty (30-day return). This may result in more demand and “sales” for the Droid 2, but it’s zero-sum game.

Ultimately, I enjoy picking fun at VZ and Moto. While you suggest they’re creating impatience, I would suggest they’re creating cognitive dissonance (buyer’s remorse).

        • Barlog

          Well put. :-)

      • Francis Jodoin

No company ever succeeds by intentionally deceiving it customers. The good folks at VZW and MOTO are not dumb enough to think people will upgrade from D1 to D2 for an incremental OS release a week or two early. It might be different story if the D1 were to never get the update but what you propose make HORRIBLE business sense.

        • Anonymous

That’s an interesting take. I read his comment a bit differently. However many successful companies intentionally deceive customers. It’s called marketing, advertising and PR. How many times have you seen, save X dollars when you buy this for Y dollars. That’s deception. You’re not saving anything, you’re spending Y dollars. I do agree that blatant deception is certainly a bad business practice.

        • Jwizardc

I beg to differ. I cite Vista, Iphone4, All of the auto manufacturers as examples.

      • Pmonkey

Oh my, you are so smart you make my pipi hurt…I just love undereducated amateurs lecturing us on basic busyness sense and psychology 101 (intended for such undereducated amateurs), while calmly condescending on our interest in the wee mobile devices. It must be hard for you to get an audience for your puerile views… I am so sorry. It’s OK, you wiull get past your anal-retentive stage one day, and feel much better.

      • KGB

        Re; Sigmundrod,

To suggest this would suggest that VZW is going directly against their “Rule The Air” campaign that they are spending millions of dollars on. VZW is trying to get 2.2 to customers as soon as possible without compromising the customer’s phone or security. This also can’t and will not be an i-*hone 4 situation. You should know what you’re talking about before you open your mouth. You’re trying way too hard to sound intelligent, however; you just sound ignorant and uneducated about why people come to this site.

      • Regbs

“If you understand the way business works, [then you’ll agree with me. Disagreeing proves you don’t understand.]” Great framing of a discussion.

“Everything is planned”! The iPhone 4’s death grip is all part of Jobs’ grand scheme, you imbeciles!

Sigmund, You demonstrate your mastery of business by offering false expectations and missed deadlines as the examples to follow. I don’t know what industry you’re in, but as a former military officer and JD/MBA, I can tell you that my superiors, analysts/investors, and client base lack your keen acumen.

Are you a union member, work in government other than DOD?
