AMOLED Shortage Could Hurt for Years to Come

The Droid Incredible might want to consider making a permanent change to LCD screens after seeing the latest report from iSuppli on the shortage of AMOLED screens in the mobile market. In fact, maybe HTC should decide to move completely away from them as this new report is predicting shortages for years to come.

With Samsung and LG as the only major AMOLED producers in the world, neither has been able to keep up with demand for their screen technology. And now that Samsung has its own line of high-end Android devices, they plan on using what they can produce for themselves, which only makes sense.

Does this mean the end of AMOLED technology?

Good old supply and demand. When one or two companies control the market, they always find a way “run short” on supply as this is the easiest way to raise cost therefore increasing profit…

OLED is a 'cool' but rather garbage technology – it's the thin-filament lightbulb of display technologies – ie it is engineered to decay and be replaced. Additionally it's color reproduction and contrast are off-the-wall unrealistic. LCD ftw!

I also wish you could calibrate the touch screen. The Droid's screen is a bit inaccurate.

I doubt it… I was just joking, but it would be nice to have some settings to adjust especially as the screens get bigger and people use them more for watching movies.

Is that possible? I know that CNET said the Droid's colors were extremely accurate out of the box. If the screen could be calibrated then I would certainly pick AMOLED over LCD.

My complaint is the over-saturated colors. Comparing an Incredible's screen to a Droid's is like a TV in torch mode at Best Buy versus a calibrated set at home. AMOLEDs colors don't look better, they are brighter. A lot of people like that look but I don't.

It takes many years to get the plant up and get it operating at capacity providing good quality product. The market will be tapped, but not for a little while. You're talking billion dollar investments, and people aren't going to jump in unless they're pretty sure that some other tech isn't going to come along shortly and make their billion dollar investment obsolete.

I'm still waiting for my Droid Incredible. What happens if the AMOLED screen breaks in the future. Assuming one has phone insurance, I guess the good news is a phone replacement will more than likely be a new vs. refurbished phone if HTC does move to LCD.

ahhh~! is the money to be made? yes. are there solutions in the pipeline? yes (samsung is building a new factory to just to produce these screens to meet demand)

it's ALLL business…demand goes up when you keep new tech waiting….unless a chinese company comes with cheap labor and overhead and cut throats to manufacture them ;p

i'm sure we'll be seeing many phones with these screens in the future.

Didn't Jobs also point out that consumers are to blame for Apple's hardware flaw? Job's also pointed out that flash is useless, that an open app(lication) market is only for porn, that multitasking wasn't needed, the ability to send pictures you took with the iphone wasn't needed.

The point is, Jobs will say anything bad about a technology until he incorporates it into his products in the next yearly release. I'd trust a pee soaked bum on the streets of Seattle before I put my faith into what Job's says.

First iSuppli is a firm that used to supply UPS and Fedex tables to firms for online shipping, so take their commnet as you may.
Second if there is a shortage someone will jump in and fill the shortage if there is profit to be made. Anyone have Micro Econ 101? I have faith in the market.

off subject but why does kellex never post jairomeos roms? his roms are preety beast or cyanogen mod? is it because they dont have a froyo rom or do they? cuz i mean they are credited for most froyo roms out there and they both do good work so idk why they dont have a froyo rom yet on that note does anyone think rom manager should have screen shots of roms cuz i think i miss out on a lot of good roms just for the fact that i dont wana download random roms wasteing 3 or 4 mins to flash them and find out i dont like them preety annoying to me

Poor DI.. cant get any love out there… Would suck to see such a nice phone get booted from Verizon if HTC can't provide them for sale.

Damn. Hoped to see maybe Super AMOLED displays on future Android devices besides Samsung.
Though thats not all bad, the Samsung Galaxy S line up is incredible in both looks and functionality.
If they have something better in the future with stock (maybe Gingerbread could help with that?) I'd totally jump on that.
For now, hope lies in HTC's new display technology that'll most likely be revealed by the end of the year. Hopefully they can get plenty of them out there for others as well…

Which is something Jobs pointed out as to why iPhone uses IPS displays. Besides, AMOLED exaggerates colors and is hard to read in direct sunlight.

Because YOU say so? Because Samsung says so? Yes, it's superior in the battery usage department, but tests have show that the exaggerated colors it produces results in very unrealistic images. Also, like I pointed out, lack of backlighting makes it difficult to read in direct sunlight. All LCD's are difficult to read in sunlight, but AMOLED is almost unusable in sunlight.

My wife has a Dinc with an AMOLED display, so yes I SAY it is superior as it's contrast makes images super sharp compared to my Droid. Plus SUPER AMOLED addresses your major complaints.

I'm ignorant. What is the advantage of AMOLED displays? The only distinguishing thing I have heard about it is that it is harder to view in the sunlight. Is it cheaper? Crisper images?

colors are more vivid, crisp images. compare the colors and blacks on the incredible with amoled vs the evo with lcd. advantage incredible

AMOLED(Anamorphic Light Emitting Diode) displays don't require backlight and therefore reduce power draw. This is what drives their lack of brightness in direct sunlight, you can only get so much light from a small pixel. The nice thing about them is, they're super 'contrasty', meaning they provide rich looking colors. They can also be made VERY thin and flexible, but that's not really a current application for smartphones.
