Google: Android 2.2 FRF72 Build is Not Official

This should come as no surprise, but as you’ll see from the screenshot above, the Android 2.2 FRF72 build that was leaked out over the weekend to Nexus One owners is not official.  According to Ry Guy, a Google employee, the team is working “feverishly” on the final version and hope to have it out the door soon.

And this, is awful news for Motorola Droid users.  If Google hasn’t even put together the final build of Froyo for their precious Nexus One, then shouldn’t we expect another lengthy waiting period from Motorola and Verizon hacking away at it?  We have sources who claim that Verizon and Motorola already have Froyo and that the Droid 1 should see it before the Droid X and Droid 2 come out, but with this news today, we’re becoming less and less optimistic.

We should remind you that you can experience Froyo today by following our rooting guide which prepares your installation of Android 2.2.

Thoughts anyone?

’m anxiously awaiting froyo on my incredible, but I am perfectly satisfied with eclair. Although I would root if there was a froyo port for the incredible….my first Android device after years of being a loyal iPhone fan and I will never look back to Apple again. Froyo is going to rock. Thanks for all your hard work Google.

Because some ways wouldn't show the .zip I looked at the file name in astro before I decided to do it and it was update.zip.zip even though on my PC it just showed update.zip. that got a lot of people lol

  • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

    haha that pesky “.zip”!!!
Thanks for the shout out :-P

  • otter34

Thanks. Can I install more than one kernal or run more than one at a time? I remember reading that there was one that fixed the wi fi tethering issue. While I don't need that I could see myself using it in the future and I think Kellex reported that it might be offered in the future so I figure I might as well install it while I can (hoping that it will still work even though they don't offer it).

So, if I was to root and install a 2.2 rom, what do i have to do to unroot if I would like to receive the official 2.2 Froyo update when it comes out?

  • http://bit.ly/9q5tuE Almighty1

    Actually, I meant…

Is there a tutorial on setcpu somewhere since let's say I had 800 max and 500 min, what should I set the CPU Governor to? And should Auto-Refresh, Set on Boot be enabled? Also, should the profiles be turned on and enabled? Thanks!

  • http://bit.ly/9q5tuE Almighty1

I have a question, if you setcpu at 800 max and 500 min, then wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of a 1Ghz kernel when you're only using 80% of what it's capable of?

Is there a tutorial on setcpu somewhere since let's say I had 800 max and 500 min,

I have questions concerning SetCPU, taking the 1100 Standard Voltage for example, what should I set the CPU Governor to? And should Auto-Refresh, Set on Boot be enabled? Also, should the profiles be turned on and enabled?

  • http://bit.ly/9q5tuE Almighty1

The wifi isn't actually in the kernel but it's a kernel module so you can use any 2.2 kernel and as long as you have a good tiwlan_drv.ko in /system/lib/modules, then all is well. A few persons on mydroidworld had wifi issues with P3's kernel because that file is 1 year and 10 months old so I provided the one from the stock 2.2 ROM (droid-life's FRF57) and it seems to have fixed the problem. See this thread and look for the post from me, post #260 here:

My question is if Google didn't put out the source code for Froyo, then what are the kernels provided by P3, Chevy and others for froyo 2.2 built from?

Well at least when it comes it won't have as many buggs

Not moving to Froyo until Google puts out the source code. Waiting to see what Cyanogen's gonna do with it.

I wouldn't think that the MotoDROID's 2.2 update would be slowed by the fact that google is still working on the N1's final release. I mean doesn't Motorola do all the programing with Verizon on the DROID?

  • Towelie420

Let's see, Nexus One users got 2.1 update in like december or maybe earlier if I am remembering correctly. Us droid users didn't get 2.1 official until end of March. So we won't see 2.2 officially any time soon. The current 2.2 roms were fun to dabble with, but my experience with them was instability. Some apps won't load, some apps aren't visible in the market. People seem to claim that there is no longer a need for a task killer because it's all built in to froyo. I strongly disagree. And to make matters worse, Advanced Task Killer WILL NOT WORK with froyo. Bugless beast froyo was, to my surprise, the worse of the three I tried. It was quite the opposite of bugless. I want an official, stable build. And I want one NOW. By the time we get Froyo, they'll be claiming that Gingerbread or some other stupid dessert has been released.

  • Scampbell9171

I have the HTC Eris Droid and I hate the fact that if you have more than one app downloaded it drasticly slows down the phone. I thought that Verizon is in competition with AT&T's iphone? scampbell9171@gmail.com

  • spyder00

okay i can't stand it i'm rooting 2.1 right now im at work dl all the essentials…i have an hour and half left at work plenty of time? or should i wait till i have more? and is there any reason i should wait? need some advice please!

    • Mark

it will take around 30 minutes to do everything. if u already have it downloaded then it should do even faster. as long as you follow Kellex guide its easy as pie

    • otter34

Whatever you do make sure you change the name to update and NOT UPDATE.ZIP. I made that mistake and it took me an hour and a half (thanks again to Tim for his help!) just because of that one stupid mistake

      • Towelie420

I know Kellex kept saying name it update.zip but i had that same problem too. then I named it update (without the .zip) and it worked perfectly

        • n3br4sk4

the n1 got released in south korea with 2.2 already loaded yesterday…because of that i thought google would push it out to US users pretty soon….

oh well…i guess my gf's gotta wait ;p

  • Rmoyer62

Kellex, This is off topic but do you remember that video posted last week showing off the droid x's camera? I recognized the background of the video and it was filmed right near rutgers university in new brunswick, nj…not to far from VZ's corp headquarters in Basking Ridge, think this may be where @droidlanding may be hiding a device?

  • spyder00

    video*

  • spyder00

question i know there is the vedio update to “root” 2.1 but it's not really rooted right it's a rom? and if so has anyone yet cracked that 2.1 safe and rooted her yet? I still havn't yet but oh so close!

  • http://twitter.com/erikjdurwoodii erikjdurwoodii

I do appreciate the “hands-off” and “gentle-nudge” approach that Google takes toward the “customized” communities. They seem to realize that it is us that pushes the envelope of our hardware and explores every avenue of exploitation. I am a firm believer of there being a group of developers at Google who are common players and purveyors of custom ROMs, scripts and mods and the feedback and developments of the community get assimilated into internal nightlies based on quality and value.

With advanced users, you can either be part of the conversation or lose complete control of the discussion.

But for all sakes and purposes, I enjoy the privilege of having a unique experience on my personal communication device and look forward to the early adoption the clever and innovative opportunities the Android platform has to offer.

I like my BB 1.1 that can keep 2.2 as long as they want. Verizon is going to remove the tethers anyway what's the real benefit. I mean I tried BB .0.2 Froyo and it was nothing but trouble and not fast at all if you ask me.

    • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

You need to use jrummy for froyo it is fast!

      • otter34

I second that. I used bb 0.2.1 and it was my first froyo Rom. I had some problems, but not many. It still worked, but flash didn't work and it rebooted a couple of times for no reason (and the temp wasn't hot at all).

3 days ago I went to Jrummy and yep it's lightning fast AND flash works. I have the stock installed which should be 800Mhz but I had quadrant scores as high as 1103 w/out any other kernels installed.

      • machinegun68

Which one are you using? The Froyo Kangerade V1.0?

        • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

          Yep!

  • Neffy

This f'n blows! I need the official build to be released so all of the magical ROM builders can cook up something awesome. I'd love to use Kangerade but I've found with the leaked version of froyo that 802.1x authentication for wifi doesn't seem to be working and that's what my work uses.

Anyone else experience this or know of the cause?

    • Mrpicolas

Try different kernals that is where the wifi is compiled I am running jrummys kangerade with 1ghz lv and have no wifi issues

      • otter34

I, too have Jrummys and love it. I just have stock. I haven't installed kernals before. Is it possible to give me a link that you would recommend?

        • Mrpicolas

          Do you have rom manager?

        • Mrpicolas

If you have rm try chevys 1.0 ghz low or ultra low kernel leave it clocked
at 800 max 500 min in setcpu

          • otter34

Yes I have the free version. Thanks. I have everything set to 125 min in setcpu. Should I change the cpu settings for everything else to 500 min. I.e. standby and charging?

          • Mrpicolas

Bump up to 250 125 still has issues and set user profiles at 500 min 800 max

          • Mrpicolas

Sounds like you are having issues coming out of sleep state. At 125

          • Almighty1

Thanks, I have tried different 2.2 ROM's (jrummy's, onix, chevy's) with different kernels and experienced the same issue. I'm going to give the stock kernel and Kangerade a shot and see if I still can't connect at work.

This does not necessarily kill all hope of quick and smooth updates for all (read most). Motorola and HTC could be getting updates right a long with the rest of us and implementing their changes as they go. They could very well be ready to hit the ground running as soon as Google gives the gold go ahead.

  • thegod

Luckly i followed kellexS simple way to root(wit sprecovery & petes build of 2.1) than the directions for froyo 2.2 because i was dying for adobe flash porn whoohooo!! , jk but i dig the 2.2 youtubes ability to turn the cam at any angle and still watch the vid, flash sites and overclocking wit longer battery life and my scholng grew some inches peace god hotep

  • El El Kool J

yah.. we pretty much are all rooted here so… no sweat of our backs… this wonderful froyo build(s) we all run now are running absolutely smoothly, well atleast for me it is.. :) so sad news for u non-rooted community i guess.. root+Droid= a rooted droid… haha..

  • EggoEspada

It'd be pretty nice for the official Froyo for Droid to release soon. I need my CyanogenMod fix. :)

  • http://twitter.com/AngelRod111 Angel Rodriguez

No surprise…look what happened with the 2.1 update….there are still countless phones not updated. The Eris finally got it, and now it's being discontinued!!! LOL This is a perfect example of why I'm rooted!!!

  • rockymtnhigh

I am thinking the majority of people on this site are unconcerned about the OTA version of Froyo, since most are already enjoying ours in one of a variety of flavors. And there is no way I am giving up overclocking or tethering for the “official” verizon version. I'll drink the kangerade thank you very much. :-)

      Well said! +1

        • kellex

Hah thats funny, hadn't thought of that timing. Oh Google.

      • El El Kool J

just as we all get our source ROMs for froyo there will be a leak for Gingerbread … :)… gotta love Root!!

    • Mrpicolas

You can get the real froyo for 2.99 at your lcal froyo shop any flavor you want

  • Tubeaday

Does this mean the Android 2.2 mentioned above is not valid?

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

      Exactly what it's saying :-P
But just because it doesn't have Googles signature, doesn't mean it isn't the real deal :-)
