New Droid Incredible Commercial: Camera

by: | posted 05.21.10 | Videos

The newest commercial to hit the “Droid Does” series shows off the 8MP camera on the Droid Incredible in a pretty brilliant fashion.  Whoever sits at the front of this marketing campaign better be receiving bonus after bonus.

Funny thing is, that Verizon keeps pumping these commercials out almost as fast as they keep pushing the Incredible ship date out…6/14 now people.  Yikes.

Android 2.2 Headed to OEMs in Coming Weeks

by: | posted 05.21.10 | News

Sending Android 2.2 to OEMs and open source community in the coming weeks is a good thing, right?  Definitely.  (Hello 2.2 ROM anyone?)  Continuing to expect the Motorola Droid or Droid Incredible to receive the update sometime in June?  Probably a reach.

For those not familiar with the terminology, an OEM is the “original equipment manufacturer” meaning Motorola, HTC, Samsung, etc.  And as we’ve seen in the past, they are not always the swiftest when it comes to releasing OTA updates to carriers and end users.

We should point out though, that OEMs and carriers are no longer Android update virgins.  They’ve done this now a few times and we should hope that their mistakes were used as learning tools.

Are we back to our August prediction?

ESPN ScoreCenter Hitting Android This Month?

by: | posted 05.21.10 | Apps, News

After announcing that the Score Mobile app had hit the Android Market today, and expressing our frustrations with the lack of a ESPN ScoreCenter app to date, one of our commenters informed us that it is officially on the way.  Possibly by the end of May.  (Yes that rhymed.)

Playdom, who created the iPhone version, is said to have it almost ready…

In social media, the company said it has a deal with Playdom to develop ESPN-branded sports games that can be housed on Facebook and MySpace. Also, ESPN’s ScoreCenter, which provides score updates to iPhone users, will be available as an Android app this month.

This news, just made my Friday.

Custom Theme Friday: Mash-Up Dark Cyan V2.2

by: | posted 05.21.10 | DROID, Root

We had a special request today (which we need more of btw) for a Dark Cyanogen theme that looked pretty promising, so we checked it out and decided it was definitely Custom Theme Friday-worthy.

Theme:  Mash Up – Dark Cyan V2.2

*Note 1* - Only works on Cyanogen 5.0.6.2 ROMs and above.

Instructions:

1.  Download and install MetaMorph from the Market.
2.  Download the Dark Cyan V2.2 theme file here.
3.  Place Dark Cyan V2.2 file on your SD card and move to “AndroidThemes” folder.
4.  Open MetaMorph.
5.  Tap “Start checks” and allow that to finish.
6.  Choose “Unzip/Extract New Theme.”
7.  Tap “Apply All!”
8.  Once the framework-res.apk finishes, choose to reboot your system.

*Note 2* – If your phone goes to a blank screen after this file is applied, tap the power button and it should reboot your phone.  Return to Metamorph and apply just this framework-res.apk file again.

9.  Done!

Score Mobile Released on Android

by: | posted 05.21.10 | Apps

Finally, a sports app on Android that might be worth a little bit of your time.  While not as customizable as Sportstapp, this one appears to actually work.  It also comes with a handy widget that looks extra pretty on your homescreens.

Still no word on if or when ESPN Scorecenter will ever appear on Android, but this should ease a little bit of your sports frustration.

Friday Poll: Flash or Froyo?

by: | posted 05.21.10 | Polls

Yesterday was quite the mind-blowing experience if you are an Android junkie, I’d say.  We had confirmation of voice dialing over bluetooth, a video walk-through of 2.2, the Flash 10.1 beta release, a gallery showing off some new 2.2 features, and a possible June release date to the Motorola Droid. Yay x10.

So after seeing all of the goodies they have packed into Froyo and with Flash 10.1 ready once we actually have 2.2, which are you more intrigued by?

At first, I thought nothing could be bigger than the arrival of Flash onto a mobile device…and then yesterday’s keynote happened. To see some of this new Android 2.2 goodness in action might have changed my mind. Hello tethering, iTunes streaming and PC Market anyone?

Payment Using Paypal on Android Becoming Reality

by: | posted 05.20.10 | News

The option to purchase Android Market goods using your Paypal account took a step closer yesterday in an announcement from the Paypal team.  The Mobile Payments Library was made available to Android developers, allowing new apps to include the option to checkout using Paypal…

We know you want a quick and easy way to integrate payments into the Android apps you’re building, and we’re pleased to announce that our Mobile Payments Library is now available for the Android.

The Mobile Payments Library allows you to add checkout functionality for donations, personal payments, physical goods and services sold through apps on the Android phone without having to worry about keeping customers’ personal financial information secure.

There are people on both sides of Team Paypal, but let me just say that while you may not all be huge fans of their services, at least we’ll now have options.

Oh, and I officially love Google I/O.
