Chrome to Phone Extension for Froyo

by: | posted 05.24.10 | Apps, News

It’s painful to talk about Froyo right now, but I’m sort of hoping that the more we  talk about how awesome it is, the sooner we’ll see it on the Droid.  And that might be the most idiotic statement I’ve ever typed.  Moving on…

When the time actually comes that we receive Android 2.2, the “Chrome to Phone” feature might be one of the most anticipated.  And in case you missed the keynote and didn’t see this 2.2 addition in action, the above screenie sort of shows how it works.

Basically, you go to a page on your browser, hit the little mobile phone button, it links with an app on your Droid, and BAM!  Webpages, directions, photos, files, etc. shared right to you device wirelessly.

Download the app here.

Download the Chrome extension here.

Download the Firefox extension here.

Or maybe one of you developers out there could just port this app to 2.1?

Cheers Briderx!

Release: JRummy’s Pink-Life

by: | posted 05.24.10 | DROID, Root

While reading this post, just imagine the giant smile running across my face.  This, is pretty cool stuff right here.

As many of you know, we’re big fans of JRummy’s CyanogenMod ROMs and his newest release has a special connection to this site.  JRummy’s Pink-Life went live on Friday and has some special Droid Life goodies attached to it.  Not only did he feature our pink and black color scheme, but he included the DL boot animation plus our black and white live wallpapers that were released a couple of weeks ago.  Oh, he also optimized them to work even better with Cyanogen ROMs.

This may sound biased, but this might be the best work JRummy has done to date.  And to make this install even easier, he included a special Pink-Life Customizer in ROM Manager which will allow you to choose each option along the way.

Instructions…

*Note 1* – In brackets are the choices I made to get the full Droid Life experience.

1.  You have to be rooted to perform this.  (Root here.)
2.  Open ROM Manager and select “Download ROM”.
3.  Select JRummy and “Rom w/ Pink-Life (Customizer)”.
4.  Choose “Rom with Pink-Life”.
5.  Choose a kernel.  [Bekit 5 Slot 1.0Ghz standard voltage]
6.  Choose a launcher.  [LauncherPro]
7.  Choose a live wallpaper.  [Droid-Life Dark lwp]
8.  Choose a boot animation.  [Droid-Life Boot Animation]
9.  Choose a font if you wish.
10.  Choose extra apps if you wish.
11.  Choose apps to delete if you wish.
12.  Your custom Pink-Life ROM will now download.
13.  When prompted to backup or wipe data and cache, feel free to make a backup.
14.  No need to wipe data if you are coming from another ESE81 ROM.
15.  Choose to reboot your phone.
16.  Allow your phone to work the Pink-Life magic and reboot.
17.  Done!

Full support thread here including JRummy’s donate link.

Try your hardest to support his continued work by donating.

*Note 2* - The pink Beautiful Widgets skin is available under “Download Skins” at the very bottom of the list and is called “cashmere.”

Weekend Recap: Motorola Shadow Leaked, Droid Receiving 2.2, Nexus One Gets Froyo

by: | posted 05.24.10 | News

A recap from a weekend full of Droid Life goodness that you may have missed while spending too many hours away from your computer. We wouldn’t want you missing out on the latest rumors, news, hacks, apps or ROMs now would we? Catch up!

  • Photo of Motorola Shadow – We saw the first real photo of what could and should be the Motorola Shadow.  Our sources from a few weeks ago were spot on.
  • Google Announces 2.2 to OEMs – Google notified the world that Froyo will be released to device manufacturers in the coming weeks.  Hopefully they actually meant this week.
  • ESPN ScoreCenter this week? – The best sports app on the planet is rumored to be launching by the end of June.  Well, that would be this week.  Look for it!

Expect this week to be filled with a ton of Android 2.2 talk.  With the Nexus One update going live, we can expect many of the ROM developers to at least take a crack at porting it to the Droid.  Other than that, we’ll be all over Motorola looking for release info.

Ready for another good one?

Photo: Motorola Shadow on Verizon Leaked

by: | posted 05.22.10 | News

Yep, that’s the Motorola Shadow.  Or is it the Droid Shadow?  This picture was leaked earlier today and appears to be the exact same device that our sources said would be hitting VZW shelves in June.  That’s right.

Remember our “Mysterious Father’s Day Device” post?  Here are a few of the details…

  • 4.3″ Screen (not AMOLED)  (check!)
  • Moto Blur 2.1  (check!)
  • Had physical keys (just like HD2)  (and check!)

I’d say our sources were once again spot on.

And if you are worried about the MotoBlur, then do not buy this device.  Stick it out and wait for the Droid 2 which will be standard Google Experience just like version 1 was.

Motorola: Droid Receiving Android 2.2 in “Near Future”

by: | posted 05.22.10 | News

Motorola has finally commented on whether or not the Droid will receive Android 2.2.  And their answer?  Vague as expected, but very promising.  All Motorola Droid devices are expected to see the Froyo update, but we’re just not sure exactly when.

The Moto response…

“We’re excited to see Google’s news of the next version of the Android operating system and look forward to integrating it on our Android-based devices as it’s made available to the open source community.”

While I can’t comment on specifics, we do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future.”

At least they didn’t say “soon” right?  And maybe with the Nexus One update releasing earlier than expected, we can get our hopes up just a little?

Nexus One Now Receiving Android 2.2

by: | posted 05.22.10 | News

I know, I know, not directly related to the Motorola Droid, but yes, Nexus One owners are indeed seeing Froyo pushed to their handsets.  The only question now is, when will we see it?  We’ve heard June, predicted August, and now with this N1 update coming much sooner than expected, are we back to just a few weeks out?
