More Android 2.2 Photos on the Motorola Droid

by: | posted 05.25.10 | News

Additional pictures of Android 2.2 running on a Motorola Droid have now been released giving some backing to our original batch of photos.  Oh, and we are now disappointed.  Yes I just said disappointed.

After chatting with the source on certain Froyo features, we get some interesting news…

  • Wifi tethering?  Nope.
  • Update!: More than 3 home screens?  Yes.  5 to be exact.
  • New launcher with dedicated shortcuts?  Nope.

We’ll have to assume (hope) that this is an old build or Motorola just dropped the ball in a very big way.

Linpack Test: (Our stock Droid ran at 4.728 MFLOPS)

First Photos of Motorola Droid Running Android 2.2

by: | posted 05.25.10 | News

Android 2.2 on the Motorola Droid is a beautiful sight.  From the source, these pics are the “real deal” and the first photos we’ve seen of Froyo running on the Motorola Droid.  (Not. Fair.)   We’re also told that they have no plans on releasing this as a ROM.  (Too. Bad.)

The timeline for release is still completely up in the air, but now that we’ve seen it up and running on our baby, maybe we aren’t as far off as we had imagined.

Motorola Shadow Found in the Wild

by: | posted 05.25.10 | News

There is your first real look at the Motorola Shadow which is slated to land on Verizon some time in the end of June or early July.  Apparently it was left in a Verizon corporate gym and someone snapped a quick picture of before the phone was locked remotely.  Awesome.

The gym employee who found the device even managed to get a little info out of the guy who shamefully returned after hitting the preacher bench…

  • 16GB internal storage
  • Snapdragon processor
  • HDMI port
  • 8MP camera
  • 4.3″ screen
  • Likely running Froyo

Looks exactly like the leaked photo we posted on Saturday.

Oh, and this is another great opportunity to remind everyone that the Droid 2 and Shadow are DIFFERENT DEVICES.  When you get the chance, make sure to spread that word to some of those…well…bigger sites.

Adobe Reader App Released on Android

by: | posted 05.24.10 | Apps

After the announcements of Flash 10.1 and Android 2.2 last week, the release of the official Adobe Reader app on Android sort of got brushed aside.  In fact, this was announced on May 20th and we may be the first to report on it.  Crazy.  And after looking at the market and seeing less than 50 downloads, I’m thinking the general public hasn’t really heard about this either.

So what is it?  Your basic PDF reader with some added flare:

  • Multi-touch gestures
  • Flick-scrolling and panning
  • “Reflow” mode

Only for Android 2.1 and above.

Download: YouTube HQ App from EVO 4G

by: | posted 05.24.10 | Apps

The first ported app from the EVO 4G has been released.  (Yay!)  The automatic Youtube High Quality app is available for all users on the Motorola Droid and Droid Incredible.  Yep, rooted and non-rooted.  It’s a simple apk file install that updates your stock Youtube app to the new HQ version.

Download: Youtube.apk (alt link)  (alt link2)

Instructions for installation…

*Note 1* - This will remove theming from your Youtube widget.

1.  Download the Youtube.apk to your SD card.
2.  When the file finishes downloading, tap on it and select “OK.”
3.  Then choose “Install.”
4.  When it finishes select “Open” and play a video.
5.  Done!

*Note 2* - If your widget does not work initially, reboot your phone and it should be fine.

Comments or questions?  Hopefully we see some Froyo ports soon!

WaveSecure Shows Love to Rooted Users

by: | posted 05.24.10 | Apps

WaveSecure, one of the top security Android apps, showed some love to the rooted community last week in an email newsletter.  They featured an entire section and blog post on how you can use WaveSecure even more effectively by rooting your device.  It’s not very often that we see a mainstream Android app talk about the risks and rewards of rooting your device.  Pretty sweet though, right?

The point of the article was to show users how to root and then place WaveSecure in their system apps folder to allow for extra security…

-WaveSecure can be made hard reset proof! This means you can make WaveSecure a part of your “system” and a simple factory reset of the phone will not remove it. It will, however, erase all WaveSecure settings from the phone. For our rooted users we have modified WaveSecure to fetch these settings from the server automatically. This way, if you have set your phone to be locked, it will even survive a factory reset.

-WaveSecure has the ability to start GPS automatically even if it has been switched off. Network location can be inaccurate with error of up to 2 km. GPS lets WaveSecure pin point the location of your phone more accurately. Of course, the phone will need to get a GPS fix for it to work.

They also provided instructions on how to install it into /system/apps…

This is the simplest way of getting this done. You’ll need a recovery image like Amon RA or ClockworkMod installed on your phone which can install update.zip files.

1.  You can download the latest WaveSecure in the form of update.zip
2.  Put the update.zip file on the memory card of your phone
3.  Restart the phone into the recovery console
4.  Install update.zip

Got to love seeing a company like this that has really taken off show support to the rooted community. Maybe this will help other big time app developers join in on the party?

(Not rooted yet?  Check out our full “Guide to rooting 2.1.“)

Also, if you aren’t familiar with WaveSecure, check out the comparison we did between it, Lookout, and Mobile Defense back in our early days.
