Norton Smartphone Security Headed to Android

by: | posted 05.31.10 | Apps, News

It was only a matter of time before Symantec and their line of internet security products found a way onto mobile devices.  They plan to introduce Norton Smartphone Security for Android in the coming weeks, a service which could give WaveSecure and Lookout a run for their money.

Here are the highlights pulled from Norton’s Android site…

Prevents strangers from using your mobile device in case of loss or theft

  • Remotely locks your mobile device if it’s stolen so thieves can’t use it and run up your bill
  • Instantly locks your mobile device if its SIM card is removed, so it can’t be used with another SIM card

Protects your privacy and the personal information on your mobile device

  • Prevents access to your private information if your mobile device is lost or stolen
  • Remotely erases all information from your mobile device, if you choose
  • Lets you block annoying and unwanted calls and text messages

Eliminates mobile threats before they can cause you problems

  • Detects and removes threats and forbidden files without affecting your mobile device’s performance
  • Scans all the files and app updates you download to your mobile device for threats

We’ve seen the remote locking feature on other apps, but the “block annoying and unwanted calls and text messages” is something that has me interested.  Your thoughts?

This should be available in the Android market sometime in the near future.  With a name like “Norton” attached, would you be willing to pay for it?

If you’ve ever been unable to download an APK file straight to your Droid or didn’t have a USB cable handy, one of the easiest ways to get that file to your device is through Dropbox.

Instructions…

1.  Download and install Dropbox from the market.  (It’s free)
2.  Set up an account if you do not already have one.
3.  Download a file on your computer and upload to your Dropbox account.
4.  Open the Dropbox app on your device and login.
5.  Browse to the folder you just uploaded your file to.
6.  Tap on it to download.

Droid Incredible has been Rooted?

by: | posted 05.31.10 | Incredible, Root

Update: FAKE.  FAKE.  FAKE.  Links removed. Children on forums.  Read.

Memorial Day = party day for Droid Incredible owners.  In an attempt to revive Alldroid.org, a couple of their users apparently took on the task of trying to root the DI and succeeded!  Yay!  They now have superuser access and even some custom kernels pumping in 1.3Ghz to this already beastly device.

No instructions have been released, but should be “soon.”

Sunday Poll: Motorola Shadow or Droid 2?

by: | posted 05.30.10 | Polls

Now that we’ve seen both the Motorola Droid 2 and Shadow hit Verizon’s inventory system, those rumors of a similar release date seem much more realistic.  We’ve also been tipped off to some of the specs on these 2 new devices and we’re wondering what would happen should they both hit stores within a couple of weeks of each other?  Which would you pick?  The keyboard-less wonder aka the Shadow or a revamped and even more powerful version of the Droid?

RealPlayer Beta Released to Android Market

by: | posted 05.29.10 | Apps

RealNetworks has released the first version of their RealPlayer on Android.  It’s free and acts as sort of an all-in-one media player for your photos, videos and of course, music.  They’ve slapped a “beta” tag on it and after just a couple of minutes with it, you can tell that it lives up to that status.  While the overall idea of this app is likeable, Real has some polishing and bug fixes to take care of before this can be a contender.

Download: LG Ally Socialite App

by: | posted 05.29.10 | Apps

The LG Ally’s Socialite app has been pulled and so far, appears to work on any Android phone running 2.1.  After installing on both my Moto Droid and Incredible, there have been zero issues and the stock Android Facebook app may be a thing of the past.

The Socialite app is essentially a dual Twitter/Facebook machine.  It has a full screen widget and a much nicer UI than your stock Facebook app.  Definitely worth a look.

*For ALL users.

Download: REMOVED AT REQUEST OF OWNER.

Instructions…

1.  Download Socialite from your phone.
2.  Once it finishes, tap on it to install.
3.  Done!

Motorola Shadow Also Lands in Verizon Inventory

by: | posted 05.28.10 | News

So we got a little pre-mature on the Motorola Shadow is “no where to be found” comment in the previous Droid 2 post.  It is definitely there.  MB810, CHECK.

Maybe these 2 devices will both appear in July as the WSJ stated earlier?  I’m still going with my gut and saying Shadow in June and Droid 2 in Q4.

Thoughts?  Which would you choose if they were to come out on the same day?  (Ooh, that might be a good poll!)
