Want to Install Apps to your SD Card? OK.

Been running out of room on your Motorola Droid because of an addiction to apps?  Those times are almost over according to Google who upgraded Issue 1151 from “assigned” to “future release.”  What is issue 1151?  Oh, just the thread running whose sole purpose in life is to force Google into allowing the installation of apps to your SD card rather than to your phone’s internal storage.  The time is almost upon us.

One of the Android developers on the project even dropped this semi-timeline on us which includes the most famous update word of all time…

Apologies, but I’m not permitted to disclose scheduling information – suffice to say
it’s coming soon :)

Sorry for being vague, and thank you for your continued patience – I sincerely
appreciate it.

Happy friday :)

Pretty cool right?  No more hacking Apps2SD in ROM Manager anymore!

So should we expect this in Android 2.2?  Will June become the happiest month of 2010 knowing that we’ll be receiving Flash 10.1 and more Android goodies?  Yessir.

You would think that the “Droid-Life” app would be the first to jump on it and let us move it to the SD…..come on! :-)

Thinking about rooting this weekend. Would also like to know is flashing SPRecovery the easiest way to root from stock 2.1? Thanks

I am still running the 2.0 software on my moto droid, and its rooted, but no custom theme, just rooted so i could overclock, and loving it by the way.

I just partitioned mine because I had so much crap on my SD card I wanted to clear it anyway. Thanks for the blog.

ya it is a great feature. I have been debating on on doing it or not but i dont know how you would install the apps back on your phone itself after you wipe it to upgrade to a new rom. I know the majority of the app is on the SD card but what about the small part that is on the phone that is needed to initiate the app.

  • dominguez619

Yes, sir. Most definitely. Thank you. I appreciate that.

  • Rome

    Has anyone responded to this?

  • landoluis

Off topic, but i had a questioni kellex. I am still running the 2.0 software on my moto droid, and its rooted, but no custom theme, just rooted so i could overclock, and loving it by the way. But now every 3min, it keeps giving me the alert to upgrade to the 2.1 software, and wont stop asking. Is there anyway to prevent it from asking me this, or no?

  • slatejones

Has anyone tried this? Does it increase performance by increasing phone memory or Does it slow the phone down by looking in another location to run the apps? I have been dying to try this, but I dont want to be the guinea pig. lol.

  • jdixon74

Will this actually allow the phone to run smoother, freeing up internal memory? I am hesitant on it… what are the benefits of doing this?

A dumb question, what is the benefit of having it if you get the same space partition on your SD card? More space on phone? Won't that kill more battery as phone has to do lot of IO operations?

  • Sandso9

Anyone get apps2sd working on bb 1.0 leaked? i have my card partition but the app says its wrong

  • AlanG

I was always concerned about pushing that “Partition SD Card” button. If you do that on a PC, you're screwed.

so if I do partition the card, will I lose the data on the card?

    • rals

Yes, you will lose that information. I just partitioned mine because I had so much crap on my SD card I wanted to clear it anyway.

    Good

  • Mrpicolas

Nice to see this in the works

  • Farmer

Does this mean that if people download apps from the marketplace, that they'll easily be able to share them from device to device if it's saved to the SD care?

    • kellex

They'll find a way to hide them or lock them down, but it'll allow you to install a ton of additional apps.

    • saimin

Andy Reuben has said they will encrypt apps that are stored on removable memory.

I back them up to my SD card then, via PC, transfer them to my wife's phone. I've only done it with one app. (Better keyboard) and then uninstalled it from my phone. I didn't like it, but didn't want my 3 dollars to go to waste. I'm not a pirate!

well my sister was eligible for an upgrade on her phone and tested both the droid and droid incredible.

she liked the droid (because of the keyboard) better so I sold her my phone and got the incredible at a good discount. I have it now. I didn't intend to own the incredible, but the deal was just too good to pass up.

I am now a Droid Incredible owner and the phone is pretty good.

    • kellex

Play with it over the weekend. I plan on having a post for everyone to vent or rave about it early next week. :)

      • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

so far it's a great user experience, although not as sturdy and feels like a toy. I'm just worried about breaking it.

I'll play with it over the weekend and offer my thoughts.

    Great news! :-P
So hey Kellex, when the time comes for all these updates, can you point us somewhere which will show us how to get back to Stock 2.1update 1 from our rooted ROM's? :-)
    -Tim

    • http://twitter.com/Durrock2000 Derek Weber

Why bother? Wait ten minutes and you'll get your favorite ROM with all the 2.2 goods. If you go back to stock, upgrade, downgrade, then new ROM, you're wasting your time and taking extra chances with your phone. Four steps or one, what makes more sense?

    • preston

yes i agree with tim.i might be giving my moto droid to my girlfriend and use her upgrade to get the incredible.not too sure on that just yet

    • preston

i agree i would like to know how to get back to stock 2.1update also.thanks

  • goose50

Hey guys, need some help. Running new JRummy's red theme, and I downloaded a new 1.1 kernel. But, setCPU won't let me overclock, saying default max is 550. Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I figured this would get seen.

    • kellex

If you swipe the bar all the way to zero and then back to the top, it should switch. If not, maybe try a different kernel?

      • rals

You should also select auto detect device and not Motorola Droid/ Milestone. You will be stuck on the same speed.

        • goose50

          rals, that was money. Thanks.

          • rals

No Problem Goose, I had the same problem when I first overclocked the device.

  • dominguez619

This is awesome. I can wait though. You are correct, June is going to be one hell of a month. The last month I have to spend here in Vegas before I leave to San Diego for Marine Corps boot camp! I hope when I come back after those three months something incredible will be on the Droid. I will have a lot of catching up to do haha.

    Hey Kellex,

What theme r u running right now? And what kernel? Thinking about rooting this weekend. Would also like to know is flashing SPRecovery the easiest way to root from stock 2.1? And is overclocking and kernel the same thing?

    Thanks.

    • kellex

JRummy Red – bekit kernel standard voltage 1.0Ghz

SPRecovery is the easiest way to go.

A kernel allows you to overclock. If that makes sense. :)

      • josh1980

Is that the kernel that Rom comes with?

        • syntakk

JRummy comes with 1.1 low voltage. Overclocking on that kernel caused my phone to go into a boot loop so I changed to 1.0 standard voltage and everything is working fine now.

      • jdixon74

when using rom manager, it forces you to go to the other recovery? I couldnt download anything when i was under sprecovery.. i have alot or reboots now and it may be due to the recovery. /shrug

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

SPRecovery is the best and easiest :-)

  • http://twitter.com/TheGrantSays Grant Williamson

I can't wait for this! My SD card is only for music right now and I always need to delete apps. Thank you for this!

  • Winterfresh

That's tight, I hope they have thought behind which apps can be installed on the SD card, like certain ones cant, because they need to run faster or something.
or they add a feature where you can choose where it installs to when you initially install the app.
