Twitter Releases Official App

by: | posted 04.30.10 | Apps, News

In perhaps an unexpected move, Twitter released their official application to the Android Marketplace today. The app looks fantastic, featuring animated backgrounds and many of the features other Twitter applications already offer, including full direct message/reply/search functionality. I’m getting reports that the app only is supported on 2.1+ phones, which shouldn’t be a problem now that everyone is caught up with updates.

Things that I haven’t seen before (at least from Twidroid, my app of choice) is the ability to change your profile and picture straight from the app. As a fan of first-party apps, I’ll have to give a tip of a hat to the 140-character dynamos.

Want to Install Apps to your SD Card? OK.

by: | posted 04.30.10 | Apps, News

Been running out of room on your Motorola Droid because of an addiction to apps?  Those times are almost over according to Google who upgraded Issue 1151 from “assigned” to “future release.”  What is issue 1151?  Oh, just the thread running whose sole purpose in life is to force Google into allowing the installation of apps to your SD card rather than to your phone’s internal storage.  The time is almost upon us.

One of the Android developers on the project even dropped this semi-timeline on us which includes the most famous update word of all time…

Apologies, but I’m not permitted to disclose scheduling information – suffice to say
it’s coming soon :)

Sorry for being vague, and thank you for your continued patience – I sincerely
appreciate it.

Happy friday :)

Pretty cool right?  No more hacking Apps2SD in ROM Manager anymore!

So should we expect this in Android 2.2?  Will June become the happiest month of 2010 knowing that we’ll be receiving Flash 10.1 and more Android goodies?  Yessir.

Android App Review: FrozenBubble

by: | posted 04.30.10 | Apps, Apps, Games, Reviews

There are certain classic games that make me happy. Tetris is king when it comes to this, but there are other games that are easy to pick up and can keep me occupied for a good long while. One of these is Bust-A-Move, the quintessential “match three” puzzle game.

The premise is simple: shoot a bubble into the playing field and match three of the same color. You can bounce them off the walls in order to make trick shots. If there are any bubbles underneath the eliminated bubbles that aren’t connected to anything else for support, they fall too. If the playing field gets too full of bubbles and they cross a line at the bottom of the screen, it’s game over.

Pretty simple.

Frozen Bubble is a port of this formula to the Android platform, and I can say it does it pretty damned well. As someone who doesn’t play a whole lot of games on his Droid, Frozen Bubble is taking a lot of time off my commute on the subway; this is definitely a good thing.

The game is controlled by dragging your finger horizontally below the “game over” line to move the line of fire from side to side. A tap above the line will fire the bubble. Players on the Droid/Milestone family of phones have a little bit of an advantage as their phones’ d-pad is supported.

I can’t decide which I like better, though: touch controls allow for a great amount of precision, but the d-pad allows for a much smoother and intuitive experience. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve accidentally touched the wrong area and screwed up my shot.

The game also includes extra options, like the ability to turn off the “hurry up!” warnings that will come up if you take too long. However, this ability is turned back on once you reboot the game, along with other reset settings; it’s really annoying when you’re trying to keep your phone quiet and each shot makes a squeaking noise.

Frozen Bubble’s free, and comes with a bunch of free maps. However, there’s a link in the game to separate Level Editor app, which allows for the downloading of a new level packs and the creation of your own. This gives the game something priceless when you’re dealing with an addictive concept: replay value.

Definitely check out Frozen Bubble if you’re looking for something to kill time with, or have to entertain kids for a couple of hours.

TAT Home Preview Sent: Anyone get it?

by: | posted 04.30.10 | News

No TAT Home love for Droid Life.  It looks as though the preview was sent out yesterday to chosen gurus and we didn’t make the cut.  Damn!

Any one of you receive it?  Would love to see a video review.

Android Quick App: Robot View

by: | posted 04.30.10 | Apps

Talk about groundbreaking.  This might be the coolest-time-wasting app on the planet and it’s only in beta form.  Actually it’s not even time-wasting…the more and more I think about how amazing this app is, I keep coming up with other great uses.  So what is it?

Robot View allows you to take 3d panoramic pictures with your Droid, upload them, and then share them with the world.  Once uploaded, then run off of Google’s O3D API and allow you to cruise around rooms, scenes, or any place you or your friends are hanging out.

And my mind is blown.  Free people!

To check out the app in action, head over to the dev’s site.

Release: Droid Life App Hits the Market

by: | posted 04.30.10 | Apps

It’s here!  The Droid Life app is finally available for you all to download in the Android Market.  While this app doesn’t have any groundbreaking features, it is a nice reader-style app and will allow many of you to follow both our Twitter and blog feeds in one simple place.  And yes, this puppy is free.

What I find fascinating, is that almost 1,000 people found this app without me even notifying you.  In fact, the developers were testing it the other night at almost midnight and some of you caught wind of it and downloaded it over 500 times.  You guys are crazy!

Please feel free to let me know of any bugs and I will be sure to forward those on.

Flash 10.1 to be Released in June

by: | posted 04.30.10 | News

Adobe’s CTO gave us all a nice morning surprise today with the announcement we all sort of expected but had not actually been made official.  Well people, it’s official.  Flash 10.1 will land in the hands of developers at the Google I/O conference and then the rest of us some time in June…

We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android
smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a
general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number
and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which
we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.

How about that news to take us into the weekend?  Thank you Adobe execs.
