Skype Mobile Officially Hits Android Market

by: | posted 03.25.10 | Apps

It’s official!  And I don’t mean to get all snarky on a rainy Thursday morning, but doesn’t it feel good to see someone in the mobile world actually hit a release date?  I had Tweets coming in last night at 12:04AM PST notifying me that it was indeed available to download.  Nice work Skype and Verizon.

Possible Android 2.1 Test Update Captured?

by: | posted 03.24.10 | News

Update: A second screenie of equal quality was just submitted.

Update 3/25: So the guy that posted that fake screenie actually sent us an email today confirming that it was a joke that got way out of hand.  I think we all got that.  Nice of him to put it to rest though.  I’m guessing he got overwhelmed by the 3000+ emails sent to his Facebook account.  (Nice work DLers.)

Check out this picture we were just sent.  Receiving an update notice via text message is semi-odd, but if it is truly a test then it sort of makes sense.   It’s been quiet today on the update front, but this would match the information we had showing that the testing would begin again today.

A little background now:  Looks like it was posted as a comment on BGR earlier…

I didnt know how to get a picture on here so here is my facebook page. I was selected to be one of the testers for the 2.1 update. I was as surprised as you can imagine. nothing wrong thus far.

So what do you think?  After reading comments for 5 minutes it’s pretty obvious everyone thinks it’s fake.  I’m jumping on board with that. Fake?

Cheers Isaiah!

Video: Skype Mobile on Verizon

by: | posted 03.24.10 | News, Videos

Over the last few days, Verizon Wireless put together this quick promo video from CTIA in Vegas to sort of kickoff the release of Skype which officially launches tomorrow.  You may have also noticed the abundance of Skype ads popping up in our sidebar; I’d say that they kind of want this to be huge.  And if you want to skip all the chatter and see a few shots of Skype in action, skip ahead to the 2:17 mark…

Video: Cyanogen to Blackdroid using ROM Manager

by: | posted 03.24.10 | DROID, Root, Videos

Can’t decide between the latest CyanogenMod and Blackdroid ROMs?  The video we’ve put together today shows you the simplest way to bounce back and forth between them should you choose to do so.  Since both ROMs are ESE53 builds, they are completely compatible meaning you don’t have to wipe data and cache on each install or switch between SPRecovery and ClockwordMod Recovery to flash them.

*Warning* – As always, you are performing these tasks at your own risk.  We are not recommending that you do ANY of these, but simply providing information to you.  There is a chance you could brick your phone, do other permanent damage and this will more than likely void your warranty. Please do as much research as you can beforehand.  We are not liable for any of your actions.

Initial steps:

  • Download the new Ultimate Droid 8.1.1 Update.zip:  Link (Alt Link)
  • Place Update.zip in the root of your SD card.
  • If using SetCPU, uncheck the “Set on Boot” box.
  • Download and install or update ROM manager from the market.
  • If using the Helix styled launcher on Cyanogen, remove all widgets.

*Note 1* – I recommend choosing the basic “Home” launcher at first boot.  From there, clear off all widgets on all screens and then choose another alternative launcher (Launcher2 or HelixLauncher2).

Video tutorial:

Installation Instructions:

  • Open ROM Manager
  • Choose Install Rom from SD Card
  • Choose The Desired Update.zip
  • Choose backup if you wish, skip “wipe data” and press OK.
  • It Will Reboot Into Recovery and Install and then Boot
  • Enjoy!

Droid Loses Touch Screen Test, Wins Pretty Test

by: | posted 03.24.10 | News

Doesn’t it seems a little odd that people are still performing touch screen tests on the iPhone, Droid and Nexus One?  I mean, none of these phones are really “new” anymore, are they?  Well I guess someone deemed it a reasonable and necessary task.  Unfortunately for our beloved Motorola Droid, the results on the touchscreen test were not amazing…

And the video action…

At least after that test was performed, some other group decided to do a “pretty” test which left the Motorola Droid topping the charts…

1.  Motorola Droid
2.  Palm Pre Plus
3.  Apple iPhone 3GS
4.  HTC Nexus One by Google
5.  Samsung Behold II

Nothing can keep us down!

Google Voice Receives Major Update

by: | posted 03.24.10 | Apps, News

When I say major, I don’t necessarily mean that they’ve gone through a complete overhaul.  What I do mean, is they’ve added 2 new features which will make Google Voice users a heck of a lot happier.  So what did Google do?

  1. Added “Synchronize Inbox” feature: This allows Google Voice to to notify you immediately if you should receive a new message or voicemail.  In the past, this could take up to 15 minutes after receiving a call.
  2. Contact Options: They added the ability to tap on a contact’s picture which brings up options to allow for easy communication. (Picture above)

I have yet to receive a voicemail since the update so I can’t comment on how fast it really is, but the previous delay in notification was very frustrating.  Any notice a significant difference?

Exclusive Verizon/Skype Mobile Details Emerge

by: | posted 03.23.10 | Apps, News

The speculation surrounding the difference between other Skype apps and the new Skype Mobile on Verizon (which is due to launch this Thursday) has now been cleared up thanks to some exclusive screenies we just received.  While not a complete surprise, the difference really just comes down to the fact that Skype can be used over the Verizon 3G network while no other Skype app can, including the version on the iPhone.  The rest are stuck with wi-fi only and also lack the ability to make calls to other mobile phones or landlines without additional plans.

And a few more details to make sure you are completely in the know…

Seriously, I can’t wait.
